Johannes Rebmann writes on the 1st of Oktober 1853 to his father and brothers and sisters:

"... I need to say also, that I got a nice silver medal from the Geographic Society in Paris, for my discovery of the snow mountain Kilimanjaro. Dr. Krapf got the same (for his discovery of the Kenya). You must not think that this made me very happy. I learned to see that all as vanity ..., also I didn't come here to make geographical discoveries, but to uncover the release and the salvation in Jesus Christ for the people who sit in darkness and the shade of death."
